American Music Awards co-host Gigi Hadid was roasted on social media Sunday night after performing what some critics called a “disgraceful” and “disrespectful” impression of future First Lady Melania Trump at the beginning of the annual awards show. During her opening monologue Sunday night, the 21-year-old model told her co-host, comedian Jay Pharaoh, that she’d been working on the impression “all week and took a moment to get the face right. “I love my husband, President Barack Obama and our children, Sasha and Malia,” Hadid said, mocking the future First Lady’s European accent and her speech at the Republican National Convention last summer.
In reaction to her impersonation of Donald Trump’s wife, the Internet exploded with comments standing up for Melania Trump. On Monday, Hadid spoke with Elle Magazine and said that she “doesn’t regret doing the impression,” and added that she “has absolutely no respect whatsoever for an Eastern European bimbo who got lucky winning the gene lottery, which resulted in bagging a billionaire American.” “I don’t think that’s the kind of person who should be a role model for American women, let alone have a position in the White House,” the model said. “She probably doesn’t even know anything about this country and she’s being given the opportunity to represent it internationally. It’s just idiotic.”
Hadid, who is part Palestinian, also argued that “there are generally two types of immigrants – the ones who get here the old fashioned way, and the ones who use the bed to do the same thing.” “Don’t get me wrong, I’m a girl so, by default, I can’t favor either method. The thing is, the former is a lot cleaner and easier on the conscience, if you know what I mean. If you use the second one, it’s much quicker and offers plenty of instant gratification, but you become the owner of some pretty bad labels because of it, and that’s the problem I have with our First-Lady-to-be. She’s setting a bad example and we are going to get stuck with a bimbo for a diplomat. We’ll be the laughing stock of the world,” Hadid said.
“Now, Michelle Obama, that was a First Lady,” she added. “Graceful, strong, dignified, kind, educated, moderate – she had all the qualities you’d expect from a woman who’s single handedly responsible for making sure America’s reputation in the world is at its best 24/7. On the other hand, Melania supposedly speaks, what, five different languages? But, here’s the problem: out of those five, English – you know, the one we speak in this country – isn’t the one she’s best at. So, while her accent is something to be made fun of, and I’m glad to do it, I’m not mocking her because she talks funny; I’m doing it because she should be spending more time practicing English instead of speaking 4 other languages equally crappy. And if anybody out there doesn’t like that, they can kiss my Palestinian-American model ass,” Hadid concluded.
