For countless years, service members have given the “flag-folding speech” at military and civic events, including retirement ceremonies. Traditionally, this speech explains the colors, symbols and history of the flag. The flag-folding speech also contains several religious references, including the closing line that reads, “God bless our flag. God bless our troops. God bless America.” But, when a veteran started offering these traditional remarks at such a ceremony recently, several uniformed airmen assaulted him, dragging him out of the room because his remarks mentioned God. Now First Liberty Institute lawyers representing retired Senior Master Sergeant Oscar Rodriguez are demanding that the U.S. Air Force apologize and punish those responsible or face a federal civil-rights lawsuit.
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Sovitsky, who gave the order that Rodriguez be dragged out of the ceremony, told Breitbart News that “despite the fact that I agree completely with Sergeant Rodriguez’s position, I simply had no choice and that’s what everybody needs to understand.” Sovitsky also emphasized that “the Air Force and entire U.S. Army kind of lose their point if everybody starts doing whatever the hell they feel like doing. We’re based on rules, we are bound by them, they are the only reason why our country is the greatest country in the world. If we start disobeying orders and breaking the rules that have kept us alive this long, we might as well surrender to ISIS, to the Russians and the Chinese.”
“The military is no place for personal emotions. I fully sympathize with Sergeant Rodriguez and, like I said, I’m on his side. I like the old version of the speech that mentions God better as well, but what are we to do? The Pentagon changed the name of the game back in 2005 and the new rules clearly state that all public speeches must not include the word ‘God’ in any shape or form, and the same goes for all reference to anything divine. Why that is, I have no idea, but again – the rules are the rules. And if you want to look for someone to blame, and this goes for Rodriguez as well, then look to the White House. Our famed and battle-proven commander-in-chief is the one who made it all happen in the first place,” Sovitsky argued.
The Lieutenant Colonel continued, “God has been with this country and its armed forces from the moment we won our independence from the British. For more than two centuries, He has stood by every musket, every Colt 45, every Thompson machine gun, every M4a1, and every rail gun ever held by an American soldier. It would seem that our President has become disobedient and that, for better of worse, he has made us like that as well. Against our own will, I might add.” Sovitsky also said, “Once again – I was just following orders and enforcing the rules set forth by our commander-in-chief. I have nothing personal against Sergeant Rodrigues, I love the guy. In fact, if he loses in court, when I retire, I’m going to invite him to get drunk with me and toilet-paper Obama’s place. Who knows, we might even leave a bag of sh*t on the front door, ring the doorbell and run for our lives. Payback’s a b*tch.”
